Sheriff’s Office Investigates Fatal Traffic Crash

A 21-year-old Rockford man was pronounced dead, and a male subject is in serious condition following a three-vehicle crash on Illinois Route 173, west of Flat Iron Road, in unincorporated Harvard.

On October 1, 2023, at 1:52 am., members of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Harvard Police Department, Harvard Fire Department, Marengo Fire Department, REACT and MD 1, responded to a crash involving three vehicles.  

Preliminary investigation indicates that the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling eastbound on Illinois Route 173. The Chevrolet entered the westbound lane of travel and collided with the left front of a 2017 Lincoln MKX. This caused the Lincoln to exit the roadway to the south. The Chevrolet continued traveling eastbound and collided head on with a 2015 Ford Taurus in the westbound lane of travel. 

The driver of the Chevrolet a 31-year-old Lakemoor male was transported via helicopter to Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford in serious condition. He was charged with driving under the influence of the combination of alcohol and drugs. 

The driver a 28-year-old Rockford female and the passenger a 34-year-old Rockford female of the Lincoln were treated at the scene and released. 

The driver of the Ford a 21-year-old Rockford male was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

The investigation is ongoing and is being investigated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
