The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce that it has officially been awarded Tier II reaccreditation status through the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (ILEAP), administered by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police (ILACP).
ILEAP accreditation is a significant professional achievement that recognizes agencies that meet or exceed law enforcement standards and best practices in areas such as administration, operations, personnel, and training. The accreditation process involves an in-depth review and independent assessment to ensure compliance with rigorous professional benchmarks. Tier II agencies must meet 181 standards, compared to 69 for Tier I. Currently, only 25 police departments have reached Tier II status.
“This accreditation is a reflection of the dedication, professionalism, and commitment to excellence demonstrated daily by the men and women of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office,” said Sheriff Robb Tadelman. “Earning ILEAP accreditation means our community can have full confidence that our agency is operating at the highest level of transparency, accountability, efficiency, and service.”
ILEAP is a program designed to be an “administrative bulletproof vest.” This administrative armor was designed to reduce risk and liability, serving as a catalyst to professionalize the industry and soften the blow of a lawsuit should one be filed, despite current best practices being followed.

The Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police established ILEAP to provide Illinois law enforcement agencies with an achievable, affordable, and meaningful way to measure and improve their performance. Accreditation is valid for four years, in which departments must then apply for reaccreditation.
The ILACP partners with several major organizations in Illinois for ILEAP, such as the Illinois City/County Management Association, the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority, Northwestern University Center for Public Safety, the Intergovernmental Risk Management Association, the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board, and others who are part of the ILEAP Accreditation Council.
“By achieving Tier II ILEAP accreditation, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office once again demonstrates its commitment to excellence, professionalism, and the highest quality service,” said McHenry County Board Chairman Mike Buehler, R-Crystal Lake. “On behalf of the McHenry County Board, I would like to congratulate Sheriff Tadelman along with the entire McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, and thank them for their dedication to keeping our community safe.”
With this reaccreditation, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office continues to demonstrate a shared commitment to professionalism, accountability, and community partnership.
