The Sheriff's office currently operates five snowmobiles to regularly patrol the many miles of snowmobile trails located in the unincorporated areas of McHenry County and enforce laws regarding the operation of snowmobiles. The snowmobiles are also used to reach some of the county's inaccessible areas when responding to winter emergencies such as injured skiers, snowmobile accidents and lost or injured hunters. The deputies of the unit also instruct snowmobile safety courses during the winter season.
